I remember my first time trying tofu. Let’s just say it didn’t go well at all. My memory seems to be more intact thinking back. I was at a Chinese restaurant with a friend after finishing up classes for the day. We decided to order some appetizer that was tofu. Long story short, it wasn’t that good. That experience alone made me not want to try it ever again in life.
That seems to be how it goes. We have one bad experience that just changes us forever. How many of you have felt this? I easily avoided tofu for a while till I had the opportunity to eat some while at a friend’s house. To my amazement I was pleasantly surprised. Although I wasn’t ready to go to the store and buy it by the boat load… I was ready try it again.
Since that moment I’ve grown tremendously (my pickiness with food was terrible as a youngin). Tofu is one of those foods I eat now that you probably couldn’t get me to try back then(even if you’d pay me). Makes me wonder why I even avoided all this time.
The key is all about how well tofu is seasoned. It can taste like whatever you want it to be. For this Spinach and Tofu Stir Fry I was looking for something quick that didn’t hold back any savory flavor. Although the main ingredients are spinach and tofu what really brings it all together is the savory taste. I’m talking about onion, garlic, ginger, and soy sauce. This could not have been a better combo.
One thing about me is that I love to eat sautéed spinach. Something about this wilted green just makes my tastebud’s day. My most favorite way to eat spinach is with 2 fried eggs and few dashes of hot sauce for breakfast (yes you read that right). It’s literally my go- to. Won’t be surprised if this Spinach and Tofu Stir Fry becomes one of my go-to dinners.
Ideas for Spinach and Tofu Stir Fry
Although I absolutely love spinach I need something to add to this meal to make it complete. The K.I.S.S method (Keep It Simple Stupid) always works for me. Give me some rice and I’m completely happy. Also its a worth a try to eat this over a bed of noodles. Don’t forget the sesame seeds on top. Presentation is everything, ya know.

- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- ½ lb. extra firm tofu diced
- 1 small onion finely diced
- 2 minced garlic cloves
- 1 tsp minced fresh ginger
- 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 12 oz. baby spinach
- Black pepper
- 1 tsp sesame seeds for garnish
Heat the oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the tofu once the oil is hot and stir fry for 5 minutes or until golden brown.
Add the onion, garlic, and ginger.
Continue to cook while stirring for 1 minute.
Pour in the soy sauce followed by the spinach and a generous pinch of black pepper.
Stir fry for about a minute or until the spinach wilts.
Garnish with the sesame seeds then serve.
